It describes a face without claiming to know what is behind it, which is the honest thing to say about most people under pressure.
Indifferent says the person does not care. Impassive says only that nothing showed.

Meaning held still: Say that their stillness looked cold to the others, without accusing them of being cold.

It lands as: Puts the problem in the reading rather than the person, so nothing needs defending.

Why it tempts: The friend genuinely was managing themselves well, and loyalty wants to say so.
Why it misses: Both things are true at once: the calm was real self-management and it landed as coldness on a sister mid-argument, and validating only the first half sends your friend back into the next family fight with the same unread face and your endorsement of it. The intention is to say the stillness looked cold without accusing them of coldness, because impassive is precisely the word for a face making no claim about what's behind it, and the sister can only read the face.
Watch for: Impassive describes the surface only. Using it to mean unfeeling makes a claim about somebody's interior that their face cannot support.
