In plain English

Showing no visible emotion or reaction.

Why it is worth having

It describes a face without claiming to know what is behind it, which is the honest thing to say about most people under pressure.

Not quite indifferent

Indifferent says the person does not care. Impassive says only that nothing showed.

How the wording lands

Telling a friend that their calm during a family argument was not read as calm by everyone.

Meaning held still: Say that their stillness looked cold to the others, without accusing them of being cold.

Tactful
You were hard to read in there, and I think your sister took it badly.

It lands as: Puts the problem in the reading rather than the person, so nothing needs defending.

Tradeoff: Softens it enough that they may change nothing.
Direct
You went completely impassive, and to your sister that looked like you had stopped caring.

It lands as: Separates what they showed from what they felt, which makes the note easy to accept.

Tradeoff: Being told exactly how you appeared can feel like being watched.
Warm authority
Next time, say one thing out loud. The silence is doing the arguing for you.

It lands as: Skips the diagnosis and gives them something to do.

Tradeoff: A fix offered before they agree there is a problem can feel like instruction.

A tempting line that misses
Tell them their calm was the right call and the sister overreacted; validating your friend feels like the loyal reading of the evening.

Why it tempts: The friend genuinely was managing themselves well, and loyalty wants to say so.

Why it misses: Both things are true at once: the calm was real self-management and it landed as coldness on a sister mid-argument, and validating only the first half sends your friend back into the next family fight with the same unread face and your endorsement of it. The intention is to say the stillness looked cold without accusing them of coldness, because impassive is precisely the word for a face making no claim about what's behind it, and the sister can only read the face.

near word

indifferent

Indifferent is the verdict on the feeling, not caring; impassive describes only the surface, a face showing nothing, feeling unspecified. The distinction is the whole kindness of the feedback, you looked impassive accuses nobody, you seemed indifferent does.

ladder up

imperturbable

The rung above the held face: imperturbable cannot be disturbed at all, the calm constitutional rather than performed. The placid-imperturbable pair from the earlier lessons maps the same axis, and the family-argument note is about the gap between having that calm and being read as having stopped caring.

Watch for: Impassive describes the surface only. Using it to mean unfeeling makes a claim about somebody's interior that their face cannot support.

First met in The Visitor at Midnight. Saving keeps that example with the word.
