In plain English

Extremely attentive to accuracy, order, and small details.

Why it is worth having

It describes someone's exactness precisely enough that the listener can judge for themselves whether it is discipline or fuss.

Not quite tidy

Tidy is about how a thing looks when the work is done. Fastidious is about a person who cannot leave one small wrong detail alone.

Words it naturally keeps company with

workHe is fastidious about version numbers, which has saved us twice and irritated everyone once.
conversationShe is fastidious in a way I find restful. Nothing in that flat is where it is by accident.
thoughtI am fastidious about other people's deadlines and remarkably vague about my own.
How the wording lands

You are giving a reference for a former colleague whose exactness slows a team down and catches real errors.

Meaning held still: Recommend them honestly, including the cost.

Direct
She is fastidious. You will ship a week later and you will not ship the wrong thing.

It lands as: Names the trait and prices it in the same breath, so the listener can decide against their own deadline.

Tradeoff: A manager under time pressure may hear only the week.
Warm authority
She checks everything, which is exactly what that account needs this year.

It lands as: Ties the trait to a job where it pays, which is more useful than a general description.

Tradeoff: It hides the cost, and you will hear about it if the fit turns out wrong.
Restrained
Very careful worker. Slower than some, and the work holds up.

It lands as: Reads as an honest reference rather than a sales pitch, so the praise is believed.

Tradeoff: The mildness can make a strong candidate sound merely acceptable.

Watch for: Fastidious points at care over detail, not at how impressive someone is. The same word can describe exactness that saves a project and exactness that exhausts a team, so the situation has to say which.

First met in The Weight of an Empty Frame. Saving keeps that example with the word.

Words worth having

Build a vocabulary you can actually use.

Choose what the word should help you do, distinguish its shade, and practise how it changes a sentence.

02The promise

Useful words, not ornament.

Every word should make a thought easier to name, a sentence easier to shape, or another person easier to understand.

  1. 1
    Understand

Begin with plain English and a sound you can follow.

  2. 2
    Distinguish

See why a familiar nearby word is not quite the same.

  3. 3
    Use

Meet the word in more than one kind of sentence.

  4. 4
    Choose

Hold the intention still and notice how the wording changes its landing.

“The word is learned
when it becomes available.”

Opening or saving is never called mastery. Evidence begins only when you recall and use the word.
